Uma São Luís de exclusões: um olhar sobre os marginalizados no romance Vencidos e Degenerados
O presente artigo, com base no
romance Vencidos e Degenerados (1915), do
escritor José do Nascimento Moraes, expõe um
olhar acerca do cotidiano dos excluídos em uma
São Luís perpassada pelo decaimento social.
Para tanto, discorreremos acerca de dois eixos
analíticos: a abolição da escravidão dos negros
e mulatos e o posterior lugar e discursos em
torno deles, bem como os embates em relação
ao desenvolvimento das letras fomentado
pela arraia miúda – intelectuais que, devido à
posição que ocupam no seio social e à falta
de investimentos para permanecer no torrão
natal – veem-se cerceados quanto ao ofício de
escrever e divulgar suas ideias. É importante
ressaltar que a narrativa insere-se no período
de revivência intelectual idealizado pelo grupo
dos Novos Atenienses, o qual se destacou pelo
desejo de reavivar o mito da Atenas Brasileira.

Abstract:
The present article, based on the
novel Vencidos e Degenerados (1915), of the
writer José do Nascimento Moraes, shows us a
point of view of the daily activities of the excluded
ones in a São Luís passed by social decay. For
that, we discuss about two analytical views: the
abolition of the slavery of the black and mixed
people and the following place and discusses
about them, also the conflicts in relation to the
development of the letters fomented by the
small group – intellectuals who, because of the
position that they occupied in the society and the
lack of investments to stay in the motherland –
have seen themselves privated in relation to the
profession of writing and spread their ideas. It’s
important to say that the narrative is placed in
the period of the intellectual reborn idealized by
the group of the Novos Atenienses, which were
highlighted by the desire of revive the myth of
the Atenas Brasileira.
