  • Abstract:

Recently, the media publicized and reported the presence of high concentrations of mercury (Hg) in different species of fish from the Amazon region, which led to the ban on the consumption of contaminated fish. However, the monitoring and quantification of Hg in samples not only of fish, but also of water, samples of hair from Indians and riverside dwellers, has been studied for more than 30 years by different Brazilian researchers. These studies monitored the origin of the presence of Hg that was correlated with the gold extraction activity of hundreds of illegal mining in the greater Amazon. Therefore, this work aimed to carry out a bibliographic survey of works published in national journals in the last 30 years that bring up the topic in vogue. The results presented by the works referenced in this work indicate the presence of Hg in all the states that constitute the great Amazon region in samples of different species of fish, water resources, river sediments and in other animals, including the human species.
