  • Abstract:

This paper aims to analyze the function of the visual language of Tarot and its development from medieval Europe to contemporary Brazil, using the symbolic hermeneutics, with emphasis on Gilbert Durand's studies in addition to authors that complement symbolic thinking. It intends to clarify the evolution and the role of Tarot images and symbols through the arts, religion and spirituality. Those blades appeared approximately between the 14th and 15th centuries and portray the European lifestyle and society at that time with religious, cultural and behavior references that allowed these images to be portrayed differently for over six centuries and still have its sybolic message intact. Eventhough it was a playful practice when it first appeared, Tarot passed to represent the journey of a human being in the search for himself, reaching present times as a study of archetypal images with many diverse uses. The visual language accessed from Tarot cards has established itself, transcending the region where those blades arose and the age they referred to, empathically, as a mirror that reflects the truth to the ones who seek it. In the Tarot images it is possible to identify keys of analysis, through which the man crosses the stages of life. While we are able to interpret those images, associations emerge to unravel situations that allow us to understand our personal journeys. Therefore, Tarot from its symbology-laden illustrations, encompasses a representation of the individual in the personal, social and spiritual contexts throughout the centuries, being used in the artistic, cultural and spiritualistic spheres, reaching the contemporary world as a representative truth of the symbolic language.
