  • Abstract:

Taking into account the setting of oncological disease and palliative care, the patient care must be extended to family members, as they also face the impact of the diagnosis and treatment process, even more so when they assume the role of caregivers. This present chapter is about an integrative literature review concerning the experience of children as primary caregivers and responsible for monitoring parents in palliative care in the context of oncology. The studies found revealed the impacts on the lives of families, highlighting the emotional repercussions of the illness, the reverberations of the caregiver role, changes in routine, as well as in future plans and projects facing the imminence of loss. It was noted that, at the same time that the care provided to parents can provide feelings of gratitude and affection, the overload with this function is present, which can cause anxiety and depressive symptoms. The children's experience calls upon reflections and specific interventions aimed at this population, paying attention to the importance of studies on this theme.
