  • Abstract:

In Radical Behaviorism, B. F. Skinner and Sidman are mostly cited for their opposing views on the use of aversive control, based on their main indications of ineffectiveness and transitoriness of their effects. However, later authors affirm that there are contexts in which aversive control not only can be a justifiable option but also an effective alternative.  Among the contexts where it can be used is psychotherapy, which has several strands within the Behavior Analysis. Among them, Functional Analytical Psychotherapy (FAP) is a modality of psychotherapy that uses a therapist-client interface as the main means of intervention and resource to change patient’s behavior. In this paper, two books were investigated, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy: Creating Intense and Curative Therapeutic Relationships and a Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy: Awareness, Courage, Love and Behaviorism, in order to identify elements of aversive control in their works and to discuss them based on the recommendations of Skinner and Sidman. The conclusion is that the discussion about the use of aversive control in social instances - among them, the psychotherapy - is complex, and requires an understanding of the implications of each of the control forms. Thus, although Skinner and Sidman have shown a position contrary to this form of control, the analyzes carried out here suggest a discrepancy between the position of these authors and the development of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy.
