  • Abstract:

The puma is the most extensive land mammal in the Neotropical region, originally found from southern Canada to the southern tip of the South American continent, with the exception of the Caribbean islands and some regions of Chile. Molecular studies carried out recently pointed out genetic differences within the geographic area of the species, thus forming different phylogeographic groups. The present study had as main objective to analyze if these different phylogeographic groups presented niche overlap, as well as if these niches were similar and / or equivalent. The species' occurrence data were obtained from the GBIF, Specieslink and Biodiversity Portal (ICMBIO) databases, considering only georeferenced records and registered in biological collections or by means of photographic traps. The analyzes were carried out in software R, based on PCA-env, considering the environmental variables of Wordclim for the area of occurrence of the species. The results of the analyzes for the four selected phylogeographic groups showed that these groups did not present overlapping climatic niche, and that these niches are also not similar or equivalent. The results showed that in addition to genetically differing, these strains also differ in relation to the occupied environmental space, suggesting that the environmental parameters may be related to speciation processes within the species, where the different phylogenetic strains can be segregated in temperature, elevation and seasonality as observed in some studies previously carried out with amphibians.
