  • Abstract:

Wheat, Triticum aestivum L., stands out for its importance as a product of human and animal consumption, however, its production is affected by climatic changes and the occurrence of diseases, including leaf rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia triticina Eriks, which reduce the productivity and affect the food security of this crop. The different translocations are known between the cereals, standing out the reciprocal 1BL.1RS, coming from the Secale cereale, and the translocations 7DL.7Ae, 3DL.3Ae, coming from the Thinopyron ponticum. The objective of the study was to verify the genetic resistance to leaf rust in five wheat cultivars for prospecting of food and environmental safe genetic sources. Genomic In Situ Hybridization (GISH) and DNA molecular markers techniques were used, relating them to phytopatological evaluations and the effectiveness of the mixture of five P. triticina races. Through GISH, translocation has been verify in the 1BL.1RS on the cultivar BRS 296 and the molecular marker 011B3 / 011B5-Lr26 identified the Lr26 gene, also for this cultivar, which conferred resistance to P. triticina, confirmed by phytopatological analysis with 10% of severity. In our study it was possible to identify resistance to wheat leaf rust, in this way, the selection of cultivars with genetic resistance to the leaf, rust pathogen will reduce the use of fungicides and, as a result, healthier and more environmentally safe foods.
