  • Abstract:

The current levels of physical inactivity have cooperated to increase the sedentary lifestyle, leading to damages in health and individual wellness. In association with excessive and erroneous feeding for an incorrect lifestyle, the sedentary behaviour may contribute to the systemic arterial hypertension. In some cases, hypertension appears to be drug resistant, remaining above the levels despite the use of effective doses of all three classes of anti-hypertensives, including a diuretic. In this study, the quality of life and sleep was evaluated in patients with refractory arterial hypertension enrolled in the Family Health Strategy of the Vila São José, in the city of Araranguá/SC, using diuretics as one of their antihypertensive drugs. Most of the analyzed patients had sleep disorders and low quality of life. It is possible that the use of diuretics to treat the refractory hypertension may lead to the fragmentation of sleep, leading to nocturnal awakenings to urinate (nocturia), damaging and reducing the time and quality of the sleep. Thus, diuretics may negatively influence the quality of sleep of the hypertensive patient, reflecting, consequently, in a poor quality of life.
