  • Abstract:

The objective was to obtain ovarian measurements of 21 canine females (mixed-breed), correlating them with the number and quality of Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs). The ovarian morphometry was determined with a caliper, and the COCs were recovered by slicing of ovary, being identified in degrees (1, 2, 3 and expanded). The average values for each ovary were compared by Student's test and the data correlated by Pearson coefficient (P <0.05). The average weight of the ovaries was 0.70 ± 0.08 g for the right ovary (RO) and 0.69 ± 0.08 g for the left ovary (LO). The measures of length, width and height were, respectively: 1.54 ± 0.06; 0.97 ± 0.05 and 0.72 ± 0.07 cm for RO, and 1.60 ± 0.08; 0.94 ± 0.05 and 0.66 ± 0.03 cm for LO. The recovery of G1 COCs was superior to the other categories in both ovaries, being 70.97% and 69.10% in the RO and LO, respectively. Ovary length was correlated with the recovery of the G1 COCs (r = 0.51) and G3 COCs (r = 0.47). In conclusion, the RO and LO are similar as well as in morphometry and in recovery of COCs, and the quantity and quality of COCs are influenced just by ovarian morphometry.
