  • Abstract:

The acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition caused by intracellular activation and inappropriate overflow of proteolytic enzymes which determine the destruction of pancreatic parenchyma and of peripancreatic tissues. This disease is the fifth most common cause of death among the diseases from digestive system in the country. Thereby, the study has as primary objective, characterizing the epidemiological profile of deaths by acute pancreatitis in Bahia in the period from 2010 to 2017. Thus, it is intended to distinguish the prevalence of deaths by acute pancreatitis according to gender, age group, color, marital status, and schooling of the patients. In this scenario, the study is observational, has a quantitative nature and was done based on the data from death caused by acute pancreatitis, accessed through SIM (Mortality Information System) in DATASUS (Health Unic System Computing Department, from Brazil). Hereupon, the data were tabbed and analyzed by the application Microsoft Excel®️‎ 2016 version, focused on the obtainment of the most affected groups, and confronted with the literature subsequently. There was a total of 1.475 deaths registered by acute pancreatitis in Bahia between 2010 and 2017, with the greatest rates of death among males (66,2%). About the age group, it was stood out people between 50 and 59 years old (17,8%). In the variable color/race, brown people were highlighted (57,5%). Evaluating the marital status and the schooling, single people (34,5%) and ones with schooling ranging from 0 to 7 years (54,9%) were excelled. Thence, the epidemiological profile of deaths from acute pancreatitis in Bahia is absolutely important in the identification of the most affected groups, initiative that allows establish hypotheses for this phenomenon and, consequently, actions with the intention of reducing it.
