HYDRAULIC ELEMENTS CHARACTERIZATION ON A TEST FACILITY. APPLICATION IN FILLING AND EMPTYING PIPES SIMULATION

  • Abstract:

In a water distribution networks, the hydraulic elements operating conditions depend on their technical characteristics and the hydraulic conditions in the network. The company EMIMET (Global Omnium), in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), has developed a model to simulate the behavior of pipes during filling and emptying operations. To achieve this objective, it has been necessary to characterize the hydraulic elements that participate in the operation of the networks (valves, air valves, drains, ...). For that purpose, the EMIMET test facility has been used. It has the capacity to characterize hydraulic elements up to DN 800, and it is equipped with the necessary instrumentation. Tests were carried out on butterfly valves of several diameters, gate valves operating as drain valves, automatic hydraulic valves and air valves. Concerning air valves, more than 120 tests have been also carried out on three test facilities owned by different companies, to verify their reliability and compare the results obtained with those provided by the manufacturers. The reliability of the simulation model was checked with experimental data recorded in field tests. A discrepancy of less than 12 % between the experimental and theoretical results provided by the model was obtained.
