  • Abstract:

Labels are elements of communication between products and consumers. Clear information about quantity, characteristics, composition, quality, as well as the risks that a product presents is a basic consumer right. Knowing this, it is essential to read the labels present in these products, to ensure better options for purchase and consumption. Thus, the objective of this work was to verify the knowledge about food labeling of students in the Pedagogy and Mathematics courses at the Universidade de Pernambuco Campus Petrolina. The research is of a quantitative and descriptive nature, with a cross-sectional design, where 50 questionnaires of knowledge about food labeling were applied to students of the Pedagogy and Mathematics courses at the Universidade de Pernambuco Campus Petrolina. With the data analyzed and tabulated, with the results transformed into a percentage, using Microsoft Office Excel for Window 2010. 58% of people said they only read the labels sometimes, while only 14% often read them, but most said they understand the labels, however 60% do not trust the information brought in them. Most respondents do not research on labels and 66% are unaware of labeling regulations. 46% were dissatisfied with the information, and 54% said that the labels do not interfere at the time of purchase. It could be concluded that the students do not have, in their majority, the habit of reading the labels present in food, this may be due to the fact that they do not have a good understanding of this, and have never received any guidance.
