  • Abstract:

The study aimed to contribute to the discussion of relationship between gender, drugs and mental health. The research study was carried out in 2019 at Psychosocial Care Center for Alcohol and other drugs (CAPS ad) in João Pessoa city, Brazil. This was qualitative research based on oral history methodology which proposed to tell interviewees' histories and enable new interpretations of their experiences. The narratives were constructed from an in-depth interview with three participants. The transcription protocols were presented for the interviewees, in order to allow them to participate in the construction of their narratives and interpret their own histories. The data analysis suggested that during their experiences with drugs, it was important the issues related to gender, family, socioeconomic and cultural factors. It was identified that women misuse psychoactive substances, and experience more difficulties to seek and continuing treatment, because they do not stand themselves as drug users for their family and for the patriarchal society. In addition, they have difficulties to be part of a mostly male service, which still offers minimal actions geared to the specific demands of these women.
