  • Abstract:

The project aims at analyzing how the ‘will to nothing’ is a central element of the nihilism of weakness and how the ‘lack of will’ overcomes the dissatisfaction with life through the ‘will to destiny’ (Lowith, 1969). The ‘will to nothing’ is a byproduct of the problem of suffering in Nietzsche’s philosophy (Reginster, 2006) in which life is condemned because pain is understood as an inconvenience. Therefore, the ‘will to nothing’ will be overcome by a reinterpretation of suffering under the scope of will to power in which pain and pleasure will become intermingled due to the fact that joy will depend on the overcoming of resistance. The close association between pain and pleasure is due to the fact that resistance, in general, produces pain and because in the will to power pleasure depends on the overcoming of resistance, the pain will be praised. The ascetic ‘will to nothing’ must be substituted by the will to power in which the aggressive instincts of the individual is discharged into the world because there isn’t a condemnation of the resistance the will might find. The will to power will reinterpret volition, overcoming the Schopenhauerian comprehension that the will is a consequence of a lack. In a Nietzschean point of view, volition will be associated with contentment and joy leading to a lack of will in which individuals accepts destiny as it is (Birault, 1967).

However only the strong individuals will be able to love the positive and negative conditions of life, because they escape resentment by gratitude (Giacóia 2013).
