• Abstract:

  This work presents an analysis of the application of the Design Thinking

  methodology in the discipline of Introduction to Engineering with the objective of

  integrating the areas of knowledge – Design and Engineering – and achieving

  innovation in the process of developing new projects. Design Thinking is a methodology

  for solving complex problems that utilizes and applies Design tools, centralizing the

  process in people and their needs, through associative reasoning and analytical

  thinking. Through the decentralization of the practice of Design from the hands of

  specialized professionals - in this case the Designers – Design Thinking is an approach

  that allows its principles to be adopted by people working in several professional areas

  – such as Engineering, for example. As an object of study, the “OpenFab” Project was

  approached, belonging to the discipline Introduction to Engineering, taught during the

  1st semester of 2018 to the students of the 1st series of the Engineering courses of

  the Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia. The aim of this study is to observe the process of

  developing an engineering project using a Design methodology, analyzing its effects

  and impacts as a teaching strategy in student learning, at the beginning of the course,

  considering the dimensions related to the technical-scientific competences and the

  possible and existing interdisciplinary knowledge.
